The Lost-Wax Method

How a Bronze Sculpture Is Made

Every Yuyou Arts sculpture follows the lost-wax (cire perdue) casting method — a process used since antiquity, refined in our Shanghai workshop. No critical stage is ever subcontracted.

Step 01Sculptor shaping a clay model of a classical figure

Sculpting & Mould Making

Our sculptors model the original in clay and wax, capturing every fold and expression. A silicone mould is then taken from the master model.

Step 02Molten wax injected into moulds, wax replicas on worktable

Wax Injection

Warm liquid wax is injected into the mould, producing a faithful wax replica — every detail of the original, ready for the next stage.

Step 03Wax patterns dipped into ceramic slurry to build shells

Shell Building

Wax replicas are coated again and again in fine ceramic slurry until a hard shell encases them. Dried and fired, the wax melts away — leaving a hollow mould.

Step 04Molten bronze poured from crucible into moulds

Bronze Casting

Molten bronze at over 1,000 °C is poured into the shell. After cooling, the ceramic shell is broken away to reveal the raw casting.

Step 05Craftsman grinding and polishing a bronze casting

Welding, Chasing & Polishing

Cast parts are welded together, seams chased away and every surface refined by hand until the sculpture is flawless.

Step 06Artisan applying hand patina with brush and torch

Hand-Applied Patina

Heat, acids and a craftsman's brush give each piece its colour — from classic browns to antique greens. Finally inspected, mounted and packed.

"Every piece is checked — not promised — before it leaves the workshop."
